Description
This painting is about the gathering of people, memory, color, and spirit.
The tipis rise out of the landscape, as if they belong to both the earth and the sky. I wanted them to feel grounded, but not still. The horse is meant to feel like he is dancing between the two.
Everything in the painting is moving: the marks, the color, the light, and the energy surrounding the camp. The central lodge catches the light and becomes the heart of the painting. Turquoise, gold, violet, coral, and flashes of red move across its surface, while the surrounding tipis seem to emerge and disappear into the darkness.
I love that tension between what is clearly seen and what is only felt. It reminds me that a place can hold the presence of generations long after a particular moment has passed.
