Description
This painting is about the freedom of the herd and the quiet beauty of horses simply being horses. Scattered across an open meadow, they move, graze, gather, and wander without urgency.
I wanted the composition to feel almost endless, as though the horses continue far beyond the edges of the canvas. At seven feet wide, the painting becomes a landscape you can almost step into. Rather than carefully defining every horse, I allowed them to emerge from layers of color, texture, and broken brushwork. Some are immediately recognizable, while others seem to dissolve back into the grasses and atmosphere. That balance between abstraction and representation gives the painting its sense of movement and memory.
The soft earth tones are interrupted by turquoise, deep reds, blacks, creams, lavender, and flashes of yellow wildflowers. Those unexpected colors are intentional. I am less interested in painting the literal color of a horse or a field than I am in painting what it feels like to stand among them.
For me, horses have always represented freedom, intuition, and an ancient connection to the land. In this piece, there is no single horse that demands attention. The herd itself is the subject, the rhythm of many individual lives moving together beneath a vast Western sky.
