Description
This painting tells the story of Native American warriors coming home after battle. I wanted to capture the moment when the fight is behind them and the long journey home has begun, a return not only to their people, but to family, land, ceremony, and belonging.
The warriors emerge slowly from the darkness. Some are clearly seen while others nearly disappear into the paint, representing those who returned alongside the memory and spirit of those who did not. There is strength here, but there is also exhaustion, reflection, and reverence. The deep blues, turquoise, and earth tones represent the landscape and the distance traveled. Against that darkness, the brilliant orange/yellow shields become points of fire and life, the enduring spirit carried by each warrior. The unexpected passages of pink, green, violet, and turquoise suggest the beauty of home beginning to surround them again. I intentionally kept the figures loose and partially abstract. I wanted them to feel as though they are moving between memory and the present, carrying the experiences of battle while slowly returning to the familiar rhythms of their community.
For me, this painting isn’t really about the battle itself. It is about the return. It is about warriors coming over that final ridge and knowing that home is ahead. They return changed, carrying the stories of what happened and the memory of those left behind. But they also return to something greater than themselves: their people, their ancestors, their land, and the place where they belong.
