Description
As were many people over this past year, I’ve felt strongly how we’re standing in the crosshairs of profound evolutionary change. Not noticeable in a single day but accumulating. We’ve been standing on trembling ground, seeing beliefs and edifices fall, stepping forward even when the way seems hazy, unclear where exactly we’re headed, yet faith in a future coming towards us as fast as we walk toward it.
Each piece began with spontaneous marks on a page using botanical inks and acrylics. The paper itself was then transformed, kneaded to become like fabric (momigami). As I worked with them over the course of three months I held these questions in my mind:
What of the old remains as bedrock?
What symbols and formulas still work and which are being transformed?
What elements of change are held within?
How do we stay patient, not forcing, for right emergence?
Are novelties welcomed or resisted?
What hints do we have of what is already being built?
How do we prepare and hold open space for what we trust will come yet don’t know?
Each piece felt like a conversation, a response to one or more of my questions. Stitch marks were added using cotton, silk, wool and synthetic threads dyed with plants, mushrooms and commercial processes.
