Ben Bloch’s paintings are inspired by the landscape of Southwestern Montana and Northern Idaho. Constructed from a combination of memory and close observation, Bloch combines formal spatial techniques with his own brand of modern expressionism. These paintings are designed to highlight both the material qualities of paint and the inherent tensions of the modern landscape—a landscape continually altered by new infrastructures such as roads, fences, and homes. He believes in a bold, swift style of painting, and it’s his hope that viewers will take some vicarious pleasure in the confidence of strong spontaneous paint strokes. He enjoys playing with the beauty produced by the delicate and tense harmonies of shape, light, temperature, and space, to create paintings that never tire the eye.
