Stories of the Soul: Studies Celebrating Black History Month showcases over thirty-five African American portraits and fourteen mixed media pieces by local artist Debra Pollard. The portraits of both men and women reflect the dignity, pride and determination of the individuals they portray. In the paintings, mostly in acrylic, Pollard uses wood popsicle sticks to create powerful marks of energy and texture. The underbelly of paint renderings and layering of paint enhance the depth of character and personality of the subject.
The works are inspired by Pollard’s relationships with African American friends and reflect the dignity, pride and determination of their histories. The energy of the paintings goes beyond just style or technique. Rather, they capture the stories of the people and display a common humanity all cultures share.
In talking about her work, Debra has said, “These portraits are like a biography. The can reveal the past, present and sometimes provide a hint of what the future might hold.”
In Pollard’s travels, she often meets individuals whose face and story captivate her. After a lengthy conversation and a photo, she takes to her studio to make some sketches and then embark on a portrait, incorporating the individual’s features, story, and emotions into the painting.
